During a press conference held by China's Taiwan Affairs Office including the Supreme People's Court, Ministry of Public Security, and State Security Department, a joint statement was issued announcing severe punishments for Taiwan independence activities, with the possibility of death sentences and the authorization for absentia trials. Responding to this, Wang Yichuan, from Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party, angrily stated that if China can conduct absentia trials, he would personally establish a court to sentence Chinese leader Xi Jinping to death. This move by China has stirred criticism, even prompting comments from opposition party leaders such as Zhu Lilun of the Kuomintang Party.
