On June 23, 2024, China announced through the Taiwan Affairs Office that the most severe punishment for those advocating Taiwan independence is the death penalty, with a statute of limitations of 20 years. President Lai Ching-te emphasized that China has no authority to sanction the Taiwanese people, and democracy is not a crime but authoritarianism is. He also pointed out that in China's view, anyone not supporting reunification is seen as advocating for Taiwan independence. Lai called for unity across parties in Taiwan and urged China to engage in dialogue with the legitimate government of Taiwan for the well-being of both sides, suggesting that failing to do so will only lead to a further deterioration in relations between Taiwan and China.
