On July 1, 2024, Chinese 17-year-old badminton player Zhang Zhi Jie collapsed during a match, and despite efforts to resuscitate him for 3 hours in a local Indonesian hospital, he was pronounced dead in the evening. The hospital tried transferring him to another hospital for a second round of resuscitation, but unfortunately, the attempts were futile. The incident raised concerns about the slow response and lack of immediate medical attention at the event, prompting calls for rule changes by the Indonesian Badminton Association to allow medical teams to intervene without referee approval.
