On June 22, 2024, China's Taiwan Affairs Office announced 22 new regulations on punishing Taiwan independence activities, with the most severe penalty being the death penalty. In response, DPP Secretary-General Lin Right Chang criticized the regulations as absurd, stating that according to China's logic, every citizen of the Republic of China would be labeled a Taiwan independence advocate. Lin emphasized that the real threat to Taiwan's sovereignty comes from the Communist Party of China, not Taiwan independence advocates. The Taiwan government urged its citizens not to be affected by China's regulations. Lin further condemned the collaboration between the KMT and DPP on this issue, highlighting a new crisis facing Taiwan's democracy.
