In an effort to crack down on Taiwan independence supporters, China's Taiwan Affairs Office, along with other agencies, released a new set of laws with 22 articles outlining convictions and sentencing for crimes related to splitting the country. The highest penalty for the offense of splitting the country is the death penalty, effective immediately. The announcement highlighted China's strong stance against those advocating for Taiwan independence and emphasized the importance of upholding national sovereignty and territorial integrity by holding individuals accountable for their actions, even if they attempt to evade justice for up to 20 years.
