China has recently purchased between 400,000 and 500,000 metric tons of milling-quality wheat from Canada and Australia as extreme heat threatens local crop yields. With the Henan province issuing warnings about hot weather affecting wheat production, these purchases mark China's first significant imports from Australia in over a year, though China has high wheat inventories from prior harvests. The shift in imports is partly influenced by lower international wheat prices and ongoing economic conditions in China.
