China's Taiwan Affairs Office recently released an opinion on punishing 'Taiwan independence' stubborn elements for separatism and inciting the separation of the country, with the severest punishment being the death penalty and a statute of limitations of 20 years. Ko Chien-ming, the DPP caucus convener, criticized the move, linking it to the sudden outburst of Kuomintang caucus leader Fu Kun-chi who opposed the concept of 'two countries' just a few days prior. Ko described this as selling out the country and urged an investigation into national security implications. He highlighted the escalating tensions in Taiwan and the threat posed by China's actions against advocates of Taiwanese independence.
