On June 21, 2024, the Chinese mainland Taiwan Affairs Office and related departments held a press conference announcing a new regulation to punish 'Taiwan independence' advocates. The regulation states that those convicted of 'separatism' could face the death penalty, with the possibility of trial in absentia. In response, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council emphasized that Beijing has no jurisdiction over Taiwan, stating that such actions would only stir up cross-strait tensions and hinder positive relations. The Council also warned Taiwanese citizens against the threats and intimidation from mainland China, noting the stark differences between the two systems in terms of freedom and democracy.
