China Issues Punitive 'Taiwan Independence' Ordinance, Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan Calls for Resuming Cross-Strait Dialogue with Accumulation of Goodwill

Reported 8 months ago

In response to China's recent ordinance on punishing 'Taiwan independence,' Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan of the SEF Foundation expressed hopes of restoring stability in cross-strait relations through dialogue and exchanges with goodwill. The ordinance stipulates severe penalties for actions promoting Taiwan's separation from China, such as Taiwan joining international organizations limited to sovereign states or engaging in official exchanges and military contacts, with the most severe punishment being death. Mayor Cheng emphasized the importance of dialogue and goodwill accumulation between the two sides, cautioning against actions that hinder cross-strait progress. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council criticized China's punitive measures, citing concerns for human rights and safety, advising caution for travel to China and urging people in China to prioritize personal safety.
