China-Philippines South China Sea Conflict Escalates: China Seizes Firearms from Philippine Military, Claims Intentional Collision by Philippine Ship

Reported 8 months ago

The conflict in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines escalated again with the Philippine armed forces releasing footage accusing Chinese coast guard of forcefully boarding a Philippine vessel at Ren'ai Reef, seizing military firearms and navigation equipment, resulting in seven injuries. However, China retaliated, claiming the Philippine vessel intentionally collided and that Chinese coast guard did not take direct action against Philippine personnel. This marks the first conflict between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea since the enforcement of China's Coast Guard Law on June 15. The U.S. Secretary of State expressed concern, urging against actions that could disrupt regional stability, while Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs opposed any attempt to change the status quo through force or military coercion. The situation has led to increased readiness for possible further conflicts between China and the Philippines in the region.
