According to a report by China's National Bureau of Statistics, China's total population at the end of 2023 was 1.40967 billion, with a decrease of 2.08 million compared to the previous year. The birth rate for the year was 6.39‰, resulting in a natural population decrease of -1.48‰. Economist Ren Zeping pointed out the continuous decline in China's population for two years, urging for increased encouragement of childbirth. Despite the two-child and three-child policies, the birth rate continues to decrease, leading to concerns of aging population and declining workforce. Netizens expressed concerns about the financial and social challenges of having children amidst rising living costs and job demands.
