China's 'Crackdown on Taiwan Independence Advocates' Applicable to Foreigners? Can Charges be Dropped? State Council's Response

Reported 11 months ago

China's State Council and 'Two High Courts and Three Departments' jointly issued the 'Opinions on Punishing 'Taiwan Independence' Stubborn Elements for Separatist Crimes and Instigating Separation' last week, which includes the death penalty for severe offenders. The State Council spokesman stated in a press conference that if 'Taiwan independence' advocates renounce their separatist stance and take measures to mitigate or eliminate harm, they may not be held criminally responsible. When asked about the applicability of this opinion to foreigners, the State Council did not provide a clear answer. The new regulations target a small number of extremists involved in separatist activities and emphasize strict law enforcement to safeguard national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
