In 2023, China's energy consumption per person exceeded Europe for the first time due to rising demand from technology and manufacturing industries. China increased coal-fired generation but also added more renewable capacity, leading to a decrease in carbon intensity. This shift highlights the challenges of decarbonization as European fuel demand decreases while energy consumption and emissions rise elsewhere. India also saw a rise in coal use amidst economic growth, consuming more coal than Europe and North America combined.
