The Chinese government's recent issuance of the Maritime Police Bureau Order No. 3, implementing the 'Maritime Law Enforcement Agency Administrative Law Enforcement Procedures' from June 15, 2024, allowing the Chinese maritime law enforcement agencies to inspect and detain foreign ships and personnel suspected of violating their immigration regulations in claimed waters, has raised concerns internationally. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned China for not abiding by relevant international laws and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, denouncing the unilateral implementation of this measure as detrimental to regional peace and stability. Concerned about the escalating tensions, the Ministry will monitor the situation closely and ensure the safety of foreign ships and personnel passing through waters under its jurisdiction, collaborating with regional allies and like-minded countries to address the potential impacts and maintain regional stability based on a rule-based international order.
