On June 25, 2024, five departments in China jointly released an opinion document targeting pro-independence actions, with offenses such as splitting the country and inciting to split the country being punishable by death, with lifetime accountability and absentia trials. The Chinese government stressed that only a 'very few' extreme pro-independence individuals would be targeted, and those who voluntarily renounce 'Taiwan independence' would not be held criminally responsible. The regulation aims to strictly enforce the law and defend national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
