China recently issued a new regulation on Taiwan independence, announcing the death penalty as the highest punishment for those splitting the country. The DPP Secretary-General criticized China's logic, stating that based on it, all 23 million Taiwanese who elected the president are pro-independence, making even President Hou Yu-yi and Mayor Ko Wen-je culprits intending to split China. The DPP stressed that Taiwan is a sovereign independent state and that China's one-sided 'punishing independence' opinion holds no jurisdiction or legal force in Taiwan. The DPP encouraged China to face Taiwanese public opinion, stop pressuring Taiwanese people, and engage in dialogue with Taiwan's elected government to improve cross-strait relations and maintain regional peace.
