China Seizes Taiwan Fishing Vessel, Initiates Taiwan Legal Battle

Reported 12 months ago

On July 3, 2024, at 4:57 AM, Taiwan's Coast Guard encountered Chinese maritime police near Kinmen Island and monitored them until they left. A fishing vessel from Penghu, the 'Da Jin Man 88,' was boarded by Chinese maritime police on July 2 near Kinmen, and six people onboard were taken to Fujian. Analyst Chieh Chung of the National Policy Foundation suggested that this action aims to eliminate the 'legal battle' rhetoric regarding Taiwan Strait, emphasizing China's sovereignty over the area. He warned that not only fishing vessels but also commercial boats employed by the military for transporting supplies to outlying islands might become targets. Chung advised the defense and security authorities to be prepared for such scenarios, including potentially arming escort vessels.
