On June 21, 2024, China issued punishments for stubborn pro-independence elements in Taiwan and those inciting crimes to split the country. However, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council noted that Beijing has no judicial authority over Taiwan, and the laws and regulations of the CCP have no binding force on Taiwanese citizens. The government urged people to remain calm and not be swayed by threats or intimidation from China. The announcement from the Supreme People's Court of China, Supreme People's Procuratorate, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of State Security, and Ministry of Justice outlined penalties for pro-independence activities against national interests, including the possibility of the death penalty for severe cases. The Mainland Affairs Council stressed the fundamental differences between China's authoritarian regime and Taiwan's democratic system, urging caution for Taiwanese citizens visiting China.
