Reported 11 months ago

In an interview on June 22, 2024, Mayor Chen Chi-mai of Kaohsiung responded to China's recent announcement to punish Taiwan independence activists with the death penalty. He emphasized that the Republic of China is a sovereign independent state, not subject to the People's Republic of China, and that Taiwan's freedom of speech is protected by the constitution. Chen Chi-mai highlighted Taiwan's democracy and constitutional rights, stating that China lacks jurisdiction over Taiwan's affairs. He also stressed the importance of upholding the people's rights and responsibilities under the ROC constitution. This comes amid escalating tensions between the two sides. Zhuyin Han, Spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office, responded by stating that the PRC's legal framework does not apply to Taiwanese citizens.
