According to a report by the American think tank CSIS, China has significantly increased pressure on Taiwan in recent years, raising concerns internationally about the potential for a full-scale conflict. Apart from invasion threats, Beijing has other coercive options, like establishing a 'grey zone' quarantine area led by law enforcement to punish and intimidate Taiwan. This tactic aims to showcase China's control over Taiwan by implementing cost-effective blockades targeting Taiwan's major ports, particularly Kaohsiung Port, which handles a considerable portion of Taiwan's trade, including essential goods like food and oil. The report defines 'quarantine' as law enforcement-led action to control situations below armed conflict, and 'blockade' as a military-led operation to significantly reduce incoming volumes to Taiwan. The scenarios presented include limited and comprehensive isolations.
