On July 4, 2024, China attempted to smuggle military drones disguised as 'parts' to Libya and was intercepted by Italian authorities. Two Chinese-made military drones were found camouflaged as 'wind turbine parts' and intended for delivery to Libya at the Gioia Tauro port. The shipment, discovered based on US intelligence, included the 'Wing Loong-2' drones by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, capable of surveillance, precision strikes, emergency communication, and long-range capabilities. The drones were destined for Libyan military leader Khalifa Haftar, prompting their seizure by Italian customs for violating UN arms embargo regulations.
