China recently announced severe punishment for advocates of Taiwan independence, including the possibility of the death penalty for offenses such as 'splitting the country.' President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan responded by emphasizing that China has no authority to sanction the Taiwanese people. He also criticized China, implying that according to Beijing's perspective, 'Taiwan only has the Chinese Unity Promotion Party, not Taiwan independence,' and called for Beijing to acknowledge the existence of the Republic of China. President Lai expressed his concerns during a welcoming ceremony for the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, mentioning the importance of dialogue between democratic governments and condemning authoritarianism as criminal. He also called for unity among Taiwan's opposition parties against these threats from China. President Lai's firm stance may have been influenced by the reassurances from the American Institute in Taiwan regarding the Taiwan Relations Act and the policy of 'One China.'
