Chinese Automakers Allowed to Establish Assembly Plants in Taiwan? Ministry of Economic Affairs: Must Comply with Localization Requirements

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Lian Jinzhang, stated that current laws prohibit mainland Chinese complete vehicles from entering Taiwan, only components can be imported; if Chinese companies intend to set up assembly plants in Taiwan to avoid high tariffs, they must also comply with our 'localization' policy, using a certain proportion of domestic components, with the proportion increasing year by year. Jinzhang also mentioned the necessity of introducing new vehicle models to stabilize orders for domestic automobile component industries, together with applying the localization policy and enhancing competitiveness through government subsidy programs.
