Chinese Coast Guard Enforces Expanded Law in the South China Sea, Collides with Filipino Fishing Vessel

Reported 8 months ago

The Chinese Coast Guard vessel has clashed repeatedly with Filipino fishing boats in the South China Sea region. Starting on June 15th, China's Coast Guard Bureau began enforcing a law passed in 2021, expanding the Coast Guard's enforcement powers. Within just two days of implementing the new regulations, the Chinese Coast Guard released a statement on June 17th saying they had taken control measures against a Filipino supply boat entering the waters near Ren'ai Reef in the Nansha Islands. Despite the collision between the two vessels, China attributed fault to the Philippines, while the Philippines rebutted accusing the Chinese Coast Guard of using barbaric and inhumane methods. The Philippine president expressed concerns that China's new regulations would exacerbate tensions in the South China Sea. The Philippines also submitted an application to the UN on June 15th to determine the external boundaries of its continental shelf up to 350 nautical miles from the west of Palawan Island, the maximum range allowed by UNCLOS.
