On July 9, 2024, at 5:43 am, a Chinese cyberstar known as 'Iron Head' along with an accomplice urinated and sprayed graffiti at Yasukuni Shrine before immediately fleeing back to China. The Japanese police have arrested one Chinese accomplice who purchased the spray paint and stayed in Japan, whereas the cyberstar and the cameraperson escaped to China. The trio are accused of vandalism and disrespecting a place of worship, with the arrest made based on footage showing one of the individuals spray-painting the shrine in May. The estimated damage cost from the graffiti is 4.2 million Japanese Yen. The incident has sparked concerns between Japan and China, with Japanese officials expressing disquiet through diplomatic channels, and Chinese officials urging Japan to reflect on its wartime actions.
