Chinese director Zhang Jialing has been awarded the 2024 German Documentary Award for her film 'Total Trust,' which explores the use of artificial intelligence as surveillance technology in China. Zhang, now living in the United States, received the main prize of 20,000 euros at the award ceremony held in Stuttgart. The jury praised 'Total Trust' for its unsettling portrayal of AI's power in public and private life, emphasizing the film's relevance in a global context of increasing digital surveillance, even in democratic countries. Additionally, German artist and filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger, known for her documentaries like 'Mongolia' and 'Exile Shanghai,' received a lifetime achievement award for her ability to capture the rituals and customs of unknown worlds and people with calm focus.
