On June 11, 2024, a Chinese man with a background in the People's Liberation Army was arrested by the Coast Guard after driving a speedboat into Taiwan's Tamsui River, sparking national security concerns. The Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson, Chen Binhua, remarked that the man's actions were personal and advised Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party not to overreact or politicize the incident. The incident is being further investigated to understand the man's motives and any potential involvement by the Chinese Communist Party in the apparent gray-zone provocation.
