On June 9th, a 60-year-old Chinese man with a naval background was caught attempting to enter Taiwan illegally by speedboat at the mouth of the Tamsui River. He claimed to be fleeing political persecution for freedom. The Taiwan Coast Guard initially mistook his boat for a local fishing vessel but later apprehended him upon realizing the error. The Coast Guard acknowledged the mistake and disciplined 10 officers for their oversight. The man will be prosecuted under Taiwan's laws governing cross-strait relations and immigration, with deportation likely upon completion of his sentence. Further investigations are ongoing regarding the incident.
