Due to economic hardships in China, many Chinese people have resorted to illegal immigration into the United States through the US-Mexico border. The US Customs and Border Protection data shows that in 2023 alone, over 37,000 Chinese individuals were apprehended after illegally crossing the border, a 20-fold increase compared to the average of 1,500 per year over the past decade. To address this issue, the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that they chartered a large plane last weekend to repatriate 116 illegal Chinese immigrants, marking the first repatriation of Chinese illegal immigrants by the US since 2018. The DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the enforcement of immigration laws and collaboration with Chinese authorities to increase repatriation flights.
