Chinese Man Arrested for Speedboat Intrusion at Tamsui Pier, Blue Legislator Suspects Motive, Green Legislator Points Out 'Should Be Handled in Further Offshore'

On June 10, 2024, at 7:46 AM, the Coast Guard Administration apprehended a Chinese man who drove a speedboat into the Tamsui River. The man claimed to be 'seeking freedom' as he sped towards the Tamsui Ferry Pier. The Coast Guard personnel monitored the situation, arrested the man, seized the boat, and handed them over to the Shilin District Prosecutor's Office for investigation. Nationalist Party legislator Hong Mengkai expressed concern over the intrusion and urged national security units to quickly clarify the man's intentions, while Democratic Progressive Party legislator Hong Shenhan suggested that the Coast Guard should handle such incidents further offshore. The Coast Guard explained through a press release that they detected a suspicious vessel off Tamsui and took appropriate actions. Both legislators emphasized the need for increased coastal security and further investigation into the incident.
