A 60-year-old Chinese man named Ruan was arrested on June 17th for violating immigration laws after sneaking into Taiwan by crossing the Taiwan Strait from a fishing port in Fujian to Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf alone. Upon entering the Tamsui River, his boat collided with a ferry pier and a traffic boat, leading to his arrest by the coast guard. Prosecutors from Shilin District Court arrested Ruan in court and applied for detention for violating immigration laws. Ruan, who claimed to have been restricted from leaving China due to anti-government comments online, used a speedboat to cross the strait and expressed his desire for freedom upon reaching Taiwan. His motive for smuggling remains unclear and is under investigation.
