A Chinese man recently drove a speedboat from Fujian, crossed the Taiwan Strait, and entered the Tamsui River defense area on June 9, claiming to be 'seeking freedom.' It was later revealed that he was a former captain in the Chinese navy, raising national security concerns. The Mainland Affairs Council spokesperson responded by calling it a 'personal act' and criticized the DPP for overreacting. The man, in his 60s, was intercepted by the coast guard upon arrival in Tamsui and taken for investigation. Questions remain about the situation if he returns to the mainland. This incident is contrasted with two Kinmen fishermen rescued by Chinese authorities after drifting into Chinese waters, with one still being held despite his military retirement applications being processed. The government is still verifying the handling progress of this issue.
