A Chinese man, Ruan Fangyong, aged 60, drove a small speedboat into Taiwan's Danshui River on June 9th, during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. Despite being from China and facing no interception along the way, he eventually collided with a ferry near the shore, raising questions about the malfunctioning surveillance system. The Coast Guard later admitted negligence and penalized personnel involved. Ruan, who claims to have fled China due to his company's closure and critical comments towards the CCP, managed to dock without hindrance and was arrested only upon the collision. Investigation revealed possible violations of Taiwan's laws related to cross-strait relations and immigration.
