In early June, a Chinese man vandalized Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, sparking outrage in Japan after videos circulated online showing him urinating and defacing the shrine. Following this incident, the Japanese consulate in Guangzhou revoked the visa sending rights of 11 travel agencies in Guangdong, Shenzhen. This action is believed to be a retaliatory move in response to the disrespectful behavior at the controversial shrine, which is seen by many Chinese as a symbol of militarism due to its enshrinement of war dead since the Meiji Restoration. The incident has raised concerns about the impact on future visa processing and tourism between China and Japan.
