A former Chinese Navy boat captain drove a speedboat into Tamsui on June 9, leading to speculation by Taiwanese lawmakers that China might be testing our coastal defenses. Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua responded publicly on June 12, stating that it was an 'individual behavior' and there is no need for Taiwan's authorities to overreact, noting that the man will be punished upon his return to China. He also mentioned that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. This incident comes after a recent case where a retired military personnel, a fisherman stranded at sea near Kinmen, was rescued by Chinese coast guards.
