Chinese Speedboat Incident at Tamsui River Mouth: Navy Admits Radar Unable to Detect Small Boat

Reported 7 months ago

On June 13, 2024, Vice Admiral Qiu Junrong, Chief of Staff of the Navy, admitted that the Navy's radar could not detect such a small boat. The retired Chinese Navy lieutenant commander Ruan, captain of the “Hongjin,” drove a small speedboat with an outboard motor across the Taiwan Strait from Fujian's Ningde Port and directly entered the Tamsui River mouth in Taipei, where he collided with a Taiwanese traffic boat before being arrested. The Navy's failure to detect the boat raised concerns about national security, as their radar systems should have picked it up. The Ministry of National Defense is investigating the incident, emphasizing the need for better defense mechanisms in Taiwan's waters to counter new threats.
