Chinese Submarine Surfaces in Taiwan Strait, Taiwan Ministry of National Defense: Situation Under Control

Reported 10 months ago

According to Taiwanese media reports, a Chinese submarine was spotted surfacing near the western side of the median line of the Taiwan Strait by Penghu fishermen on Tuesday morning. The specific model of the submarine remains unconfirmed, but it is suspected to be a Jin-class ballistic missile nuclear submarine. Taiwan's Minister of National Defense, Chiu Kuo-chung, stated that they have 'grasped the relevant surveillance and investigation methods,' without revealing further details. Military experts believe the incident may have occurred due to a malfunction as submarines rarely surface intentionally, with the possibility of the submarine returning to its homeport in Qingdao due to technical issues. Taiwan's strategic maritime region near the southwest coast has become a hotspot for military activities involving China, Taiwan, and the U.S., as the area provides ambush locations with the deep drop in the Taiwan Strait. Both Taiwan's P-3C Orion anti-submarine aircraft fleet and the presence of Chinese submarines in the region contribute to the tense military situation. Taiwan has raised concerns over China's 'gray zone tactics' in recent years, attempting to create tensions without resorting to open conflict.
