Chinese Tourists Flocking to Japan for New Trendy Buys as the Yen Falls

Reported about 1 year ago

As the value of the Japanese yen plummeted to a 38-year low, attracting tourists worldwide, mainland Chinese tourists have been going on shopping sprees for the new 'Japanese three treasures', with two items also popular among Taiwanese buyers. With the yen depreciation making items like luxury brands, affordable cosmetics, and pearls more appealing due to scarcity and better value for money, Chinese tourists are now opting for these products. In contrast, previous popular buys like smart toilet lids and rice cookers are now easily replaceable in mainland China with local brands offering better value products. The average spend of Chinese tourists in Japan reached 293,000 yen per person in the first quarter of 2024, topping all other nationalities and highlighting their preference for Japanese goods.
