On June 22, 2024, a Taiwan Railways train derailed in Hualien's Xiulin Township due to a mudslide covering the tracks. Civil engineer, Gong Xiangsheng, expressed doubts on the effectiveness of the current alert system citing that in the event of falling rocks or a mudslide, the train would have already exceeded its braking distance before any warning could be acted upon. Gong suggested Taiwan Railways to prioritize long-term solutions such as reconsidering route selection, implementing manual slope systems, and riverbed dredging for disaster prevention instead of solely relying on AI concepts and alert systems.
