Civil Groups Return to Parliament to Warn 8 Legislators Not to Deprive People of Recall Rights

Reported 12 months ago

Yahoo News reported that the Internal Affairs Committee of the Legislative Yuan will review amendments to the Recall and Removal Law tomorrow. Multiple civil groups protested outside the Parliament against raising the recall threshold and warned 8 legislators not to deprive the people of their recall rights, urging them not to regress democracy. The proposed amendments include provisions suggested by KMT legislator Hsu Yu-chen, such as the proposal and endorsement of recalls not being allowed within one year, and the votes for recall needing to surpass the votes they were initially elected with, creating a dual threshold and making recalls significantly harder. The civil groups called for a protest and press conference, emphasizing the protection of recall rights and condemning any actions against democracy.
