Chilean state-run miner Codelco has applied for an environmental permit to extend its Gabriela Mistral copper mine's lifespan by over 25 years, with an investment of $800 million. The mining giant aims to continue operations until 2055 while transitioning to seawater for its processes by 2035, moving away from traditional land-based water sources. The mine, operational since 2008, produces around 110,000 metric tons of copper annually and employs nearly 4,000 workers.
