Confusion, clinic closures may have led to significant decreases in contraception use, study finds

Reported about 1 year ago

A study from the University of California Los Angeles suggests that in states with restrictive abortion bans, clinic closures and confusion surrounding emergency contraceptives have resulted in a sharp decline in contraception prescriptions. The research, led by pharmacy professor Dima Qato, showed a steep drop in the rate of obtaining emergency contraceptives through prescription in states with near-total abortion bans. While some states saw an increase in emergency contraception prescriptions, overall there was a 60% decline in emergency contraceptive prescriptions and a 24% decline in oral contraceptive prescriptions among the 12 states with the most restrictive bans. The study also highlighted the impact of clinic closures on contraceptive access, emphasizing the importance of protecting contraception in these states.
