Constellation Energy, a major U.S. nuclear power provider, has announced its agreement to buy Calpine Corp, a privately-held natural gas and geothermal company, for $16.4 billion in cash and stock, valuing the transaction at $26.6 billion including debt. This acquisition, one of the largest in the U.S. power industry, comes amid increasing electricity demand driven by AI data centers and the electrification of various sectors. The deal, expected to close this year, will position Constellation as the largest independent power provider in the U.S., enhancing its capacity from zero- and low-emission sources.
