On June 25, 2024, People Party chairman Ko Wen-je criticized President Lai Ching-te as untrustworthy and accused him of destroying the constitution and causing chaos. Ko even questioned if Lai would end up becoming a 'personal president' and compared history's downfall of nations to the presence of mad leaders like Hitler. Ko's remarks were met with backlash from the Presidential Office, condemning them as a huge insult to Taiwan's democracy. Ko further criticized Lai for not fulfilling his pre-election promises and accused the ruling party of creating constant conflicts instead of working towards reconciliation and societal harmony since the Presidential election in January. Ko emphasized the importance of distinguishing between the State of the Union address and questioning sessions and accused Lai of crossing constitutional boundaries by misleading the public.
