A large-scale poll conducted by the Chinese Human Rights Association and the Taiwan Research Institute for Democracy revealed that a significant 83% of the public does not support abolishing the death penalty, with only 1% in favor. Additionally, 76% of respondents believe that 'sentencing death for murder is a matter of justice.' The survey also explored opinions on the effectiveness of the death penalty in deterring serious crimes, with about 73% agreeing that it serves as a deterrent. The findings suggest a stable and strong consensus among Taiwanese against abolishing the death penalty, with a majority also expressing lack of confidence in Taiwan's judicial system while agreeing that the country upholds human rights sufficiently.
