According to the Youth Daily News on July 17, 2024, the Japanese government plans to deploy a mobile air defense radar system in Kita Daito Island, the easternmost part of Okinawa Prefecture. The mayor of Kita Daito Village revealed that the deployment plan by the Air Self-Defense Force has been approved, with construction expected to start in the 2025 fiscal year. This radar system is aimed at enhancing Japan's surveillance capabilities in response to potential airspace intrusions. Following resident briefings, the village mayor confirmed residents' understanding and consent for the deployment, with construction slated to begin as early as 2025.
