Consumer Protection Agency Sues Walmart and Branch for Unlawful Payment Practices

Reported 2 days ago

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has filed a lawsuit against Walmart and the scheduling platform Branch Messenger, alleging they improperly compelled gig delivery drivers to use expensive deposit accounts for payments. The lawsuit claims that over two years, Walmart's Spark program unlawfully forced around a million drivers to utilize Branch for their earnings, misleading them about immediate access to funds and imposing significant fees, which reportedly exceeded $10 million. Walmart dismissed the lawsuit as rushed and erroneous, and Branch defended its practices as providing valuable services to drivers.
