Amid escalating cross-strait tensions, a US columnist has proposed that Taiwan could consider adopting Australia’s military model that allows non-citizens to serve, essentially a mercenary system. Minister of National Defense Wei Chi-shun stated that while different countries have different contexts, such opinions can be studied but require careful consideration and legal basis. This raises the question of what salaries mercenaries receive in different countries. Although there may not be an urgent need for Taiwan to recruit mercenaries currently, the potential incentives and effectiveness of foreign mercenaries in conflict situations in Taiwan remain key considerations, especially in the face of cross-strait tensions.
