On July 3, 2024, at 3:40 am, the Taroko National Park Management Office received a report of suspected hunting of Taiwan's Formosan Sika Deer using construction vehicles along the Central Cross-Island Highway. As this species is protected in Taiwan, the management office immediately requested assistance for investigation and warned of legal consequences for violators. Formosan Sika Deer is the largest wild animal on land in Taiwan and is critically endangered due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure, leading to its conservation status. If violations are found, fines up to NT$3000 under the National Parks Act and possible imprisonment and fines up to NT$1 million under the Wildlife Conservation Act may be imposed.
