Controversies over Overseas Island Development Legislation involving Chinese Investment and Constitutional Lawsuit Act Amendment Shut Down; Blue Party Raised No Objections, Cases Returned to Committee

Reported about 1 year ago

At the Legislative Yuan meeting on July 4, 2024, issues regarding the Overseas Island Development Act amendment to allow Chinese firms and the amendment of Article 4 of the Constitutional Lawsuit Act, which involves constitutional interpretations, were submitted for committee review, facing opposition from the Green camp. However, unexpectedly, after the Democratic Progressive Party proposed to return the cases to the committee, the Kuomintang did not object, leading to the cases' withdrawal without review. The amendments proposed by Kuomintang legislators aimed to involve Chinese firms in major government-sponsored construction projects on offshore islands, prompting concerns about opening doors to China and resembling a Taiwanese version of the 'Belt and Road Initiative.' The Green camp accused the Kuomintang of repeatedly violating the constitution and attempting to hinder the appointment of grand justices. Despite the controversy, both cases were returned to the committee due to the Democratic Progressive Party's move, with no objections from the Kuomintang, ultimately blocking them from further review.
